CHICAGO – CooperVision announced at Optometry’s Meeting the availability of its MiSight 1 day contact lenses in higher prescriptions.

The myopia control lens, indicated for children between ages 8 and 12 years, is now available in the U.S. in -0.50 D to -7.00 D, in 0.50-D steps after -6.00 D. The company said in a press release that this range “covers nearly 100% of spherical prescriptions for age-appropriate children with myopia.”

Michele Andrews, OD, CooperVision vice president, professional and government affairs, Americas, told Healio, “Hopefully some day we’ll get to a point where we don’t need the higher power. But we do now because of the number of children with myopia.

“Now doctors will have what they need when these patients come in,” she added.

The expanded range will be included in CooperVision’s OptiExpert Contact Lens Calculator, Andrews said.

This is an app-based tool that helps contact lens fitters by calculating back vertex distance and displaying the closest power-matched MiSight 1 day prescription for a particular patient.

The MiSight 1 day lens, made of omafilcon A, is indicated for the correction of myopic ametropia and for slowing progression of myopia in children between 8 and 12 years old who have a refraction of -0.75 D to -4.00 D (spherical equivalent) with no more than 0.75 D of astigmatism.

According to a previously released statement from CooperVision, 97% of 100 U.S. MiSight-prescribing practitioners surveyed indicated they were confident that fitting the lenses will have a positive impact on patients’ long-term vision health. Eight-seven percent said they consider myopia management as the standard of care in their practice.
