IP cameras are all the more useful in the smart home. We took a look at the EZVIZ eLife 2K+ BC1C, which not only comes with a video resolution of 2K, but also 32 GB of built-in memory and full-color night vision. Like all EZVIZ cameras, the spherical camera relies entirely on its own proprietary cloud protocol for communication.

The EZVIZ package includes two smaller boxes. The larger one contains the solar panel with brief instructions, tripod mount and suitable mounting material as well as a drilling template as a sticker.

The small package houses the camera and the matching magnetic mount and a mount with a tripod thread. Also included are mounting material and another drilling template in the form of a sticker, a microUSB cable and matching 10 W USB power supply, quick start guide, service card and regulatory information.

The camera itself comes in the popular bullet shape and is 104.76 mm long with a diameter of 62.80 mm. The EZVIZ CS-BC1C weighs 365 grams and is equipped with a dark silver metal body that has black plastic on the front and back. The back part is rotated as a design application.

The EZVIZ eLife 2K+ BC1C network camera is suitable for outdoor use according to protection class IP66, as it is dustproof and protected against strong water jets. It can be used in the temperature range from -20 °C to 50 °C and up to a maximum humidity of 95 percent.

On the back is the lens thread mount (M12) in the middle of the spherical, concave bulge. The underside houses the microUSB connection under a rubber cover, with which the internal battery of 10400 mAh is charged, the loudspeaker and a combined reset and on/off button. There is also a sticker with product information and the QR code for setting up the app.

The manufacturer’s name EZVIZ is printed on both sides of the cylinder, while the microphone is installed on the left side. In the front is a 2.8 mm lens with a focal length f1.6 that offers a viewing angle of 100° horizontally and 52° vertically (116° diagonally) and has an auto-switching IR-cut filter.

In addition, there are two LED spotlights that allow night vision up to 10 meters in full color. A brightness sensor is housed underneath. The status LED is above the camera lens. The lower half of the camera front contains a motion sensor.

The EZVIZ eLife 2K+ BC1C WiFi camera with a 1/2.8 inch CMOS sensor offers 3D DNR and delivers images of 4 MP with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The maximum frame rate of 2 Mbps is selectable in UltraHD, HD, standard and self-adaptive. The frame rate is a maximum of 15 fps. Videos are compressed with the codec H.265 or alternatively H.264.

Only WLAN according to IEEE 802.11b/g/n in the 2.4 GHz frequency band is suitable for communication. Encryption of radio traffic is only supported up to WPA2-PSK and, as is usual with EZVIZ, the BC1C IP cam also relies entirely on a proprietary EZVIZ cloud protocol. At least data rates of 2 Mbps are required for video transmission.

The EZVIZ eLife 2K+ BC1C WiFi camera has an internal eMMC memory of 32 GB and offers intelligent alarm functions thanks to AI-supported person shape recognition and two-way audio.

The solar module from EZVIZ under the designation CS-CMT-Solar Panel-D is 222.6 x 155.9 x 14.9 mm in size and weighs 334 grams without the bracket. The adjustable mounting bracket comes with the tripod thread intended for the back of the panel and can be rotated freely and tilted 110 degrees. In the appropriate position, it can be easily adjusted. The solar device is housed in a white housing and contains a built-in microUSB cable 5 meters long. The cable plug has a conspicuously large plug housing and fits exactly into the recess of the EZVIZ eLife 2K+ BC1C.

The operating temperature is specified as -20 ℃ to 60 ℃ and a maximum humidity of 90 percent. With protection class IP65, the solar panel is dustproof and protected against jets of water and is therefore made for outdoors. The efficiency of the solar cells is 0.216. The device delivers a voltage of 6.0 V with up to 700 mA and thus 4.2 watts. The open circuit voltage is 7.2 V and the short circuit current is 740 mA. All values are specified by the manufacturer with a tolerance of ± 5 percent.

The workmanship of the IP camera BC1C and the solar panel from EZVIZ is again excellent. Nothing wobbles or creaks, everything looks high quality and durable. The installation is very easy and problem-free with the supplied bracket. Whether on the wall or ceiling: The metallic hemispherical mount for the magnetic back and the small threaded mount are quickly attached with two screws and allow precise alignment. Alternatively, the camera can also be attached directly to metallic surfaces and objects. The solar cell, on the other hand, must be fastened with screws.

The camera is set up intuitively and quickly as usual using the free EZVIZ app.

To do this, the WLAN connection is configured in the app and sent to the camera via QR code. The EZVIZ eLife 2K+ BC1C WiFi security camera guides you through the installation process using voice prompts, initially in English.

From then on, it is also used in the EZVIZ app, since the manufacturer relies on a proprietary protocol for transmitting the video streams encoded with H.264 and H.265. But that works well so far. Only the unusual heat development is noteworthy. Especially on the underside of the camera, the metal housing gets noticeably warm, so that the grille is not only there for the speaker, but also for ventilation.

Thanks to a built-in deep learning module, the BC1C IP camera can detect the movement of people and vehicles in real time, saving unnecessary motion alerts. The longer the camera is active, the better it adjusts to its surroundings. However, according to the manufacturer, the AI works purely locally without a cloud connection. The function also makes it possible to take better account of the less interesting areas of the video image when compressing using H.265, so that the amount of data can be efficiently reduced. Those who call up the camera streams via mobile network will not be sad about it. Saving to the internal memory can also take longer than with other codecs.

You can also use the EZVIZ eLife 2K+ BC1C WiFi camera to record your own voice for a customized greeting or deterrent. For example, if guests park their vehicles in the wrong areas, the camera plays a pre-recorded message and alerts them without having to be live on their smartphone. It’s a little creepy, but it works perfectly. The speaker isn’t the loudest under the sun, but it’s quite adequate for use in medium-sized interiors.

As a video intercom, the EZVIZ BC1C IP camera works quite well.

The image quality is very good both during the day and at night. Clear, artefact- and noise-free video and still photos are no problem with the BC1C bullet network camera. However, the frame rate of only 15 fps is not particularly noticeable. It makes for somewhat jerky movements. So more of a surveillance camera than a streaming gadget.

In addition, the connection to language assistant programs such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant works easily and without any problems. It can also be set up in a Google Smart Home, although it is known that the video stream can only be displayed on the Google Nest Hub and not on the smartphone. Google Home only allows the latter for its own Nest cameras. Apple’s HomeKit as a smart home environment, on the other hand, gets nothing unless you use Homebridge and the corresponding plugin as a bridge.

The camera is currently still automatically going into standby after 45 seconds. We hope for an update, because manual recording is also stopped before the time runs out or the memory card is full. However, the performance mode is only of limited help here, because not all smart alarms and functions are available there.

The EZVIZ eLife 2K+ BC1C WLAN camera with a suitable solar cell for autonomous power supply costs 139.99 euros or SFr. in a bundle, whereby a discount is offered on Amazon with a 25 euro coupon directly for clicking until September 25th.

If you buy the camera separately, it costs 128.99 euros or SFr. and the solar panel 29.99 euros or SFr. so the package is clearly worth it.

Overall, the EZVIZ eLife 2K+ BC1C WiFi Camera is a good 4 MP camera with good features and functions. It’s really great that she can not only save on the device itself and without the optional cloud, but also recognize people. The images are very good both day and night and have a high resolution of 4 MP. The attractive design, which could also come in a white dress, is easy to set up with the BC1C from EZVIZ. The mounting options included are good and sufficiently versatile. It’s just a pity that the recording time is limited to 45 seconds by the software and Apple HomeKit connection isn’t possible without a detour. There is still hope for a firmware update. The EZVIZ BC1C comes with an impressive battery life of 270 days and can also be installed with the solar cell in places where there is no power connection nearby.
