Tiz The Bomb, winner of the John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway Park in his most recent start, returns to the Florence, Ky., track on Saturday for the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3). The race, going 1 1/8 miles over the Tapeta surface, will offer Kentucky Derby points to the top four finishers in 100-40-20-10 increments.

Including Tiz The Bomb, the Jeff Ruby field drew a full 12 horses, plus one also-eligible.

The Hit It A Bomb Colt, trained by Kenny McPeek, came from seventh place to win the Battaglia by a neck on March 5. Before that race, Tiz The Bomb ran seventh in the Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream Park to open 2022 after capping off 2021 with a second-place effort in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

He won two other stakes races as a 2-year-old, the Bourbon (G2) at Keeneland in October and the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile in September. Both of those races were on turf.

Tiz The Bomb will be ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr. in the Jeff Ruby. He will start from the seventh post position.

Blackadder, winner of the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields in his most recent start, will join Tiz the Bomb in the Jeff Ruby. The Quality Road colt was switched to Rodolph Brisset’s barn after previously being trained by Bob Baffert.

In the El Camino Real Derby, going 1 1/8 miles over the artificial surface at Golden Gate, Blackadder settled off the pace, sitting in fifth at the top of the stretch, before finding daylight and winning by a neck. The colt earned no Derby points for that effort because of Baffert’s ban by Churchill Downs Inc.

Blackadder will be ridden by Edwin Maldonado and start from the far outside of the 12-horse field, provided that also-eligible Swing Shift does not draw into the field.

Stolen Base, trained by Mike Maker, gave Tiz The Bomb a race in the Battaglia Memorial, his most recent start. The Bodemeister colt started slowly in that race before making a late run to finish second.

The Battaglia was his first attempt on a synthetic surface, after running largely on turf throughout his 2-year-old season. He finished third in the Texas Turf Mile in January at Sam Houston.

Stolen Base drew post 2 for Saturday’s Jeff Ruby. Geraldo Corrales will be in the irons.

Texas Turf Mile winner Red Run will give the Derby trail a try on Saturday. The Gun Runner colt, trained by Steve Asmussen, sat in eighth place for most of that race before making his move around the far turn and closing from the outside to earn the victory.

Red Run has never run on Tapeta. He finished second in an allowance race in November at Churchill Downs, going 1 1/16 miles in his most recent attempt on dirt.

The colt will be ridden by Joe Talamo in the Jeff Ruby. He will break from post 8.
